Ikat is a yarn dyeing and waving technique where the yarns are dyed to produce unique effects in fabric. Warp or weft threads sections are bind together with dye resist material prior to dyeing and being woven in to fabric. Originally Ikat word comes from Indonesia which means “to bind”.
Ikat is associated with traditional weaving art for fabric from Indonesia, Malaysia Japan and India. Odisha, Telangana and Gujrat are major Ikat waving states in India.
Odisha is largest producer of affordable plain ikat, high-quality ‘ikat’ and ‘ Bomkai’ ikat saari with intensive tie and dye.
Telangana is famous for pochampally Ikat, received GI status from traditional craft sector.
Double Ikat from Gujrat called patola produced by the Salvi community using expensive silk yarns.
Ikat is called Pinyin in China, Kasuri in Japanese, Asab in Arabic, Endek in Bali and Gerinsing in Indonesia.
Various type of Ikat fabric are produced by applying resistant dye on different threads before they are woven together.
Warp ikat : When Warp threads are dyed before they are woven together pattern is visible in the warp threads on the fabric weaves.
Weft ikat : When weft threads are dyed before they are woven together. The weft threads carry the dyed pattern which appears as the weaving proceeds.
Double ikat : When resist-dying apply on both warp and weft threads in a specific pattern before they woven together. This is the trickiest and complicated type of ikat weaving. Rarely, a fourth type that originated in Odisha is called Pasapalli Ikat (pasa of a board game with four parts).
Art of making Ikat Fabric
Yarn for Ikat fabric made from natural fiber like cotton, wool, bamboo, hemp and silk washed and dried to prepare for dying as per desired design on fabric, Designs are directly marked on yarn then part of yarn knotted or bind tight together to resist the dye by using wax coated tread or plastic thread where dye colour in not required.
Tied yarn then immersed in dye to absorb the colour as per desired pattern also to achieve desired intensity of colour yarn can be dipped multiple time. The bindings are then removed and the yarn is laid flat for weaving. Once the fabric is woven, the desired pattern is visible.
The ikat process requires meticulous sorting of yarns before and after dyeing, systematic wrapping and unwrapping of the areas for resisting or dyeing and particular care in setting up warps and wefts on the loom to guarantee that the pre-dyed parts takes the right place.
Ikat handwoven fabrics show intricate exquisite patterns and vibrant colours while embodying a commitment to eco- friendliness, ethical practices and preserving the environment.
Ikat has come way beyond the times of Ajanta. This weaver skill has enough craftsmanship and fascination to give the modern world a solution to sustainability, yet rooted in tradition.
